For a long time I’ve lived in OR questions: should I do this or that? They feel careful, resourceful, safe.
But there are two problems with thinking this way. First, it’s paralyzing. You keep searching for more data and never actually decide. Second, even when you do decide, a choice made from internet research and hard thinking still isn’t grounded in anything empirical.
And a good decision almost always needs empirical data, which you can only get by going and doing the thing.
So pick one and do it. If you need to, do both. Most decisions are two-way doors anyway; you can walk back through. Don’t be afraid to be wrong. The right answer usually sits at the end of a line of wrong ones, and the only way to reach it is to go through them.
That’s part of getting better, and part of building a great company.
